There was joy all round, as Milan reached the Champions League, waved goodbye to Paolo Maldini and Fiorentina fans still celebrated an impressive fourth place.
So much was at stake in this final round, as a win with two clear goals would send the Viola into the Champions League directly, pushing the Rossoneri into the preliminary round. It was also Paolo Maldini's final match and the Stadio Franchi crowd prepared a tribute to him before kick-off.
Alessandro Nesta returned to the squad for only the second time this season, but was not fit to play. Massimo Ambrosini sat out a ban with the sidelined Christian Abbiati, Marco Borriello, Kakha Kaladze and Daniele Bonera. Fiorentina had Felipe Melo and Dario Dainelli suspended, plus Adrian Mutu, Mario Alberto Santana, Sergio Almiron and Emiliano Bonazzoli injured.

The star pair will not recover from injury in time for the big match against Inter, leaving Carlo Ancelotti with a minor selection headache...
There were reports earlier this week indicating that there was a slim chance that Milan stars Kaka and Alessandro Nesta could recover in time for the highly-anticipated derby on Sunday evening. These hopes have been dashed as both men have been ruled out of the fixture against Inter.
Kaka suffered an injury in the 1-1 draw with Reggina last weekend, and he has not won the race against time to play against Inter, according to the Corriere dello Sport. The Brazilian midfielder ended his training session at Milanello after just a few minutes on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Nesta, who has yet to make an appearance for Milan this season, recently returned from

The Rossoneri vice president has said the club will hold talks with Beckham's agent in the next few days to see if there is any possibility of keeping him at the club on a permanent basis...
Before tonight's match against Genoa, Milan vice president Adriano Galliani gave an interview to SKY Sport in which he talked mainly about the possibility of keeping David Beckham instead of letting him return to Los Angeles Galaxy in March, as was agreed in the loan deal.
"There is a very good feeling between the player and the club, but there are some problems you'll also be aware of. Let's see what can be done," he said.
"We honour our agreements, on March 9 he has to return to Los Angeles, but there is some time to go before that, and who knows, maybe the miracle will happen and the dream will come true.
"His agent is in Milan, he will talk with David after the match [against Genoa], and we will meet him in the next few days."

With injuries galore in their creaking backline, the Rossoneri are set to make a January move for the Italy national team captain…
Andriy Shevchenko, Kaka, Ronaldinho – these are the three Ballon d’Or winners already at Milanello. Soon though there could be a fourth, if a report in the Corriere dello Sport can be believed.
The Rossoneri have had problems in defence all season. Star stopper Alessandro Nesta has not played this term due to injury, Paolo Maldini is 40 and needs regular rest, while the rest of the backline has largely failed to impress.
With recent signing Thiago Silva ineligible until next season, the Corriere claims that Milan are looking to bring in Italy national team captain and legend Fabio Cannavaro next month.
Cannavaro has been at Real Madrid since joining from Juventus in the aftermath of the Calciopoli crisis in 2006, but his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu runs out at the end of the season.

Milan have closed the gap on Serie A leaders Inter to one point after a comfortable 1-0 win over Chievo at San Siro, a victory clinched by a controversial Kaka penalty
Milan 1-0 Chievo
Team News & Build-Up
Milan had lost their spot at the top of Serie A last week when they conceded a last-gasp equaliser at Lecce and, with new leaders Inter beating Palermo last night, they knew a win against Chievo at San Siro today was vital to close the gap on their city rivals to one point.
The Rossoneri still had injury problems as Pirlo, Nesta, Maldini, Borriello, Ambrosini, and Antonini were all out. Kaka and Ronaldinho supported lone frontman Pippo Inzaghi, while Gianluca Zambrotta was only fit enough to start on the bench.
Chievo were second from bottom in the table and,

Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi is likely to miss the game against Sampdoria on Sunday after picking up a knock against Tirana on Tuesday...
The Italian hit-man had to come off against the Albanian's as his side got back to old habits and lost 2-1. Inzaghi picked up a knock to his leg after challenging for a loose ball and it is highly unlikely that he will feature against the Blucerchiati.
Alessandro Nesta is also in doubt even though he made his return in Tirana. The stopper played the whole of the second half but he complained of a slight problem after the game.
Marco Borriello is ready to return after his long injury lay-off. Philippe Senderos however will miss the game as he still isn't 100 percent fit and he trained apart from the team on Wednesday.
The Rossoneri will be hoping to bounce back against a struggling Samp side. The Blucerchiati are currently down at the bottom end of the table following a

AC Milan’s defensive injuries have been troublesome so far, but there seems to be a light at the end of the San Siro tunnel.
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has had a rough time so far this season in terms of injuries, with the back line specifically hit by a spate of injuries.
Alessandro Nesta has not yet stepped foot on a pitch in an official game this season, while the same can be said of new signing Philippe Senderos. The most recent casualty was that of Kakha Kaladze against Zurich in the UEFA Cup.
Rossonero luck seems to be changing however, with good news arriving from the Milan medical staff concerning the recovery of some key defenders. Nesta is ready to return to normal training, and could even make his season debut against Sampdoria next weekend.
Janku has recovered, Nesta and Pirlo's situations are evolving well, Borriello's muscular problem is not bad: here is the weekly account of Massimo Manara who also talked about Inzaghi and Senderos.
MILANELLO - Fixed appointment with Massimo Manara: also this week Milan's Social Doctor talked about the individual players' situations. Here's how the recovery of the injured player is going, case by case.
MAREK JANKULOVSKI 'Yesterday the player resumed training with the group. He has recovered and is available again.'
SANDRO NESTA 'Sandro is finishing the last work in the physiotherapy department. From Monday he will get back to the preparations and will presumably come back after the October international break. He is constantly improving. We'll see in the next few days when he will start working at a higher level.'
