There was joy all round, as Milan reached the Champions League, waved goodbye to Paolo Maldini and Fiorentina fans still celebrated an impressive fourth place.
So much was at stake in this final round, as a win with two clear goals would send the Viola into the Champions League directly, pushing the Rossoneri into the preliminary round. It was also Paolo Maldini's final match and the Stadio Franchi crowd prepared a tribute to him before kick-off.
Alessandro Nesta returned to the squad for only the second time this season, but was not fit to play. Massimo Ambrosini sat out a ban with the sidelined Christian Abbiati, Marco Borriello, Kakha Kaladze and Daniele Bonera. Fiorentina had Felipe Melo and Dario Dainelli suspended, plus Adrian Mutu, Mario Alberto Santana, Sergio Almiron and Emiliano Bonazzoli injured.

AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has returned to full training alongside his team-mates, according to the Rossoneri's official website.
The former Italian international has been struggling with injury since the end of last season and has not made an official appearance for the club in over a year.
The 33-year-old centre-back has been doing specific recovery exercises since late February, but now appears to be moving back to full fitness as he took part in his first full training session in quite some time on Tuesday.

The defender is determined to come back for his side, scoffing at retirement suggestions...
Alessandro Nesta is determined to return to action sooner rather than later for Milan, shooting down rumours of retirement due to a back problem.
The stopper has been hampered by a back injury and he went under the knife to cure the problem in February. Although he has been recovering well, a number of voices in Italy claimed he was considering hanging up his boots. However, Nesta is focussed on wearing them once again, rubbishing the talk.
"Will I retire? That is bad talk, and I will prove it," Nesta told Sportmediaset.it.
"I am convinced that I will return to playing. If it's not this season then it will be the next."

The Rossoneri’s summer strategies have not yet been drawn as the club is waiting to see how their injury-riddled pair progress.
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted that his team’s transfer efforts will depend a lot on the recovery of two important players: Alessandro Nesta and Marco Borriello.
If the two Italians manage to recover properly, then the Rossoneri might not have to look around for a new defender and attacker, according to Ancelotti.
“Losing important players like Nesta, Borriello and [Gennaro] Gattuso was penalising for our season and also the absence of Kaka was felt, because without him we lose velocity, dynamism and unpredictability,” explained the former Juventus coach to Milan Channel.
“The transfer market of next season will depend on Borriello and Nesta’s re... Read more »
The ex-Lazio man played his last official game almost a year ago and is allegedly set to throw in the towel.
Milan’s 3-1 defeat by Napoli at the Stadio San Paolo on May 11, 2008, might have been Alessandro Nesta’s last Serie A appearance.
The 33-year-old has missed the entire campaign due to chronic back problems and La Gazzetta dello Sport reports this morning that he is considering quitting football.
The former Italian international featured in a friendly against Tiran last October and seemed close to making his comeback, but suffered a relapse and underwent surgery in February.
The rehabilitation process is now over and Nesta has resumed running at Milanello, but he has apparently not made much headway, despite the team's medical staff insisting that he is ‘clinically healed’.
