The ex-Lazio man played his last official game almost a year ago and is allegedly set to throw in the towel.
Milan’s 3-1 defeat by Napoli at the Stadio San Paolo on May 11, 2008, might have been Alessandro Nesta’s last Serie A appearance.
The 33-year-old has missed the entire campaign due to chronic back problems and La Gazzetta dello Sport reports this morning that he is considering quitting football.
The former Italian international featured in a friendly against Tiran last October and seemed close to making his comeback, but suffered a relapse and underwent surgery in February.
The rehabilitation process is now over and Nesta has resumed running at Milanello, but he has apparently not made much headway, despite the team's medical staff insisting that he is ‘clinically healed’.
MILAN - A special smile today for the Rossoneri's birthday boy: his wife Gabriela purchased half a page on the Gazzetta dello Sport in which a colourful "Happy Birthday Dad" appears, signed by the children Sofia and Tommaso, represented in a picture in which they hold a kite.
MILAN - On Father's Day, Alessandro Nesta celebrates his birthday. Double wishes for Sandro: as a father, wishes which we extend to all Rossoneri dads for today, and also for his birthday. Born on March 19, 1976, Nesta celebrates his 33rd birthday. Best wishes!

It has been a question on every Milan fan’s mind for quite some time now; when is the defence going to be sorted out?
The days when the northern giants were Italy’s answer to Arsenal, grinding out 1-0 wins with the help of Franco Baresi and current coach Carlo Ancelotti, have never before seemed such a hazy memory.
Even Milan supremo Adriano Galliani has told fans on the club’s website, acmilan.com, that there is hope for a more solid campaign in the near future, despite some comings and goings that are bound to take place at the end of this term.
The most notable of which will be the retirement of the one surviving member of that gloriously miserly defence mention

It has been confirmed that Milan defender Alessandro Nesta is to be operated on to try and resolve his recurring back trouble..
Milan only narrowly lost the derby yesterday, but as many have pointed out, it could have been so much worse in terms of the scoreline.
The Rossoneri defence could not deal with the size, weight and speed of a rejuvenated Adriano, and the precision and intelligence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
In short, they desperately needed Alessandro Nesta, whose considerable speed and calm manner could have helped his side no end.
Alas for i Diavoli, the 32-year-old was out with his niggling back problem, and now it has been reported that surgery will take place tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.
Datasport says that the doctor Maurizio Fornari and his team will perform the operation; he is the same doctor who counselled against surgery for the former Italian international last year, but now the pain is such that it prevents Nesta f

The Diavoli central defender has suffered another set-back and there are fears that not even surgery will allow him to return to action.
There were reports at the start of the week that Alessandro Nesta was on the road to recovery and it was suggested that he could sensationally pull on a starting shirt in tonight’s Derby della Madonnina against Inter.
However, he suffered a muscular problem on Friday and it is now feared he will have to go under the knife to try and address his disc protrusion issue once and for all.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reports this morning that the 32-year-old will undergo further tests next week, but it is highly unlikely he will be able to feature this term and some sources suggest that his footballing career is at risk.
