Italy coach Marcello Lippi has left the Nazionale door open for Roma captain and legend Francesco Totti and Milan stopper Alessandro Nesta.

The Giallorosso decided to hang up his international boots in 2006 after he helped Italy lift their fourth World Cup trophy.

Totti has always said that he wouldn’t return to the national set up but Lippi has dropped a massive hint to his former player and it seems as if the coach wants him back as he leaves the door open.

“Totti and Nesta decided to leave voluntarily and I have respect for their decisions because they gave Italy so much playing for La Nazionale,” Lippi told FIFA magazine.

“However the door will always be open for them. I expect determination and enthusiasm from my players, that’s the only way we can defend our 2006 title.

“I think Italy is on ... Read more »

Milan have confirmed their squad for the 2008/09 UEFA Cup competition and Alessandro Nesta will not be taking part.

The former Italian international has been suffering from a back problem which wasn’t thought to be serious, but he was not included to play for the Rossoneri in Europe.

This has led to rife speculation that Nesta will be out of action for the whole season and that he may even consider retirement.

Milan have always stated the back problem was nothing to dangerous but leaving Nesta out seems to suggest that something is not right.

The rest of the team makes the list and old war horses like Paolo Maldini and Giuseppe Favalli have been included by Carlo Ancelotti.

Here is the 25 man squad which the club have submitted to UEFA:

Goalkeepers: Dida, Abbiati, Kalac.

Defenders: Maldini, Kaladze, Zambrotta, Jankulovski, Favalli, Senderos, Bonera, Darmian, Pasini, Antonini.

Midfielders: Emerson, Gattuso, Pirlo, Am ... Read more »

Paris Saint-Germain Chairman Charles Villeneuve has unleashed a bombshell after admitting that it is his intention to sign AC Milan star Alessandro Nesta.

PSG have been something of a sleeping giant in recent years, but new Chairman Charles Villeneuve has signalled his intention to roll back the glory days.

The French giants have already signed former Les Bleus stars Claude Makelele and Ludovic Giuly this summer, while Lilian Thuram was only prevented a move to the Parc des Princes after the detection of a heart condition.

Villeneuve is now setting his signs on some top-class targets abroad and, in a stunning declaration, he admitted that it is his plan to sign Milan star Alessandro Nesta next summer.

"This year is still early,” Villeneuve told ANSA.

“But next year we wi ... Read more »

According to the Corriere dello Sport, Milan are likely to go into the market and buy another defender following an injury blow to Alessandro Nesta.

Centre back Nesta has endured a rather injury prone career, all dating back to a serious problem he picked up during the 1998 World Cup in France.

His niggling and chronic injuries, particularly around the groin and back area, eventually led him to retire from international football in 2007. Having played no internationals, the 32-year-old’s fitness has improved, however he still missed around a quarter of last season.

During pre-season training, Nesta’s back problems have resurfaced, and this is proving a cause of concern for the Milan technical team. As a result, the Rossoneri are almost certain to go into the market and sign another centre back as cover for the new season.

General manager Adriano Galliani had stated last week that no one else would arrive fo ... Read more »

Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has ruled out the chance of a return to the Italy national team, and says that there is no chance of him overturning his decision.

The 32-year-old has not played for the Azzurri since a Euro 2008 qualifier against Georgia in October 2006, eventually announcing his retirement from the international game last year.

Following the exit of Italy coach Roberto Donadoni, who Nesta did not have a great relationship with, and the return of Marcello Lippi, there have been many reports in the media that the former Lazio star, as well as Francesco Totti, could return for the 2010 World Cup campaign.

While Totti has so far failed to rule out a comeback, Nesta has confirmed that he will not be overturning his retirement decision.

"The national team is a closed cha ... Read more »
